Comment: Still living in the Lake Zurich area, where I moved right after college for my first job (Industrial Arts teacher at LZHS). Been here ever since! Lots of thing have come and gone since OPRF, most of them good. Married for 26+ years now, enjoying the retired life and we are hoping to continue traveling all over once this damned pandemic is over! |

Comment:
I have fond memories of OPRF (when I can remember anything from that long ago!), and I appreciate much more in retrospect what a good high school it was. It took me awhile, through college and for several years after, to settle down in one occupational direction, but it's all worked out in the end. I went to Harvard to major in Applied Math (there was no Computer Science then), but ended up as an Art major and actually worked as an Art Editor for Houghton Mifflin Co. for four years, in Boston. Around that time, China was just starting to open up and our family went there in 1977, the first time for Lisa and I. After that I got interested in learning Chinese and Chinese history, and I successfully applied to a Master's program in East Asian Studies at Stanford. Although I never did finish the Master's, I did meet my delightful hubbie in a Chinese literature class there (his Chinese is really good), and I found interesting and rewarding work at Stanford, which has lasted just over 30 years now! The specifics of my work at Stanford has varied over the years, as I've been in different jobs in different areas, but it's basically always had to do with both people and computers. Right now I am the project lead on the launch of a new student reporting system -- which is going live on 10/19 or I would've tried to make the reunion. I've very much enjoyed working at Stanford -- it's a beautiful campus and there are always interesting things going on -- recently Doug and I attended a taiko drumming workshop! The best part of these past years, for sure, has been having a family and getting to raise two wonderful children to adulthood. I still miss them, though they've been out on their own for awhile now -- Nick is in New York City, working for Google and Allie is in Kunming, China, teaching English. We had a great family trip to visit her this past summer. Good wishes and greetings to everyone, and maybe I can make the next gathering! |

As a last resort I became a businessman and got an MBA from Northwestern. I worked for the U.S. Treasury Department as a federal savings and loan regulator for 25 years. My work involved writing, financial analysis, laws and regulations, and computer programming. Since retiring in 2002 I've been a volunteer tutor, environmental and historic-preservation political campaigner, and class reunion co-organizer. Oak Park High proved to be very important in my life. |

Comment: My wife (Mary Ahrendt OPRFHS Class of '71) and I have lived in River Forest since college except for a 10 year period in Washington, DC. I earned Masters Degrees in Architecture and Business Administration at the University of Illinois. Mary worked as a Registered Nurse and Professional Consultant to Eye Surgeons. I spent 36 years working for the Kirkland & Ellis law firm. My last position was Senior Director of Administration, Chicago Office. Prior to Kirkland, I spent 5 years working for the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. We are both retired as of 2017 and celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary in December, 2022. I have kept my license (architect) current which allows me to work on family residential projects. Our three sons all attended OPRFHS and live in Orono, Minnesota and Oak Park, Illinois. We welcomed our 7th grandchild on June 19, 2021. We are enjoying family, travel and life in general! |
